Thursday, May 24 - PXL THIS 16! – 8PM
"Gerry Fialka's PXL THIS festival snaps, crackles and pops off the
screen with the funky, user-friendly energy of real first-person
cinema. Goofy, gorgeous, and altogether groovy, his provocative
program of pieces produced with the Fisher-Price PXL 2000 toy video
camera is not only downright entertaining, but more, its blipping and
buzzing black 'n' white picture-bits coalesce into a veritable
inspiration to all those who cherish the playful, spontaneous gestures
and low-cost of electronic folk art." -Craig Baldwin.

Thursday, May 31 – Videos by Joel Tauber – 8PM
Joel Tauber explores elemental philosophical questions about our
relationships to nature and the environment in an often quixotic
approach. In a 12-channel video installation and a series of
photographs, Tauber chronicles how he first fell in love with this
tree and then embarked on a quest to improve its living conditions, to
build a museum in its honor underneath its canopy, and finally, to
help it reproduce. Joel Tauber will be screening a number of the
videos from the 12 channel video installation.

The films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Along with his installed video show
Unknown Forces
April 18 -- June 17, 2007

http://redcat.org/gallery/0607/weerasethakul.php

Internationally recognized for his work in experimental and narrative
cinema such as Mysterious Object at Noon (2000), Blissfully Yours
(2002), Tropical Malady (2004) and Syndromes and A Century (2006),
Apichatpong Weerasethakul presents his first solo exhibition in the
United States. Weerasethakul's films explore perception, impermanence
and the imaginary, cultivating fanciful potential within the mundane.
His abstract interchanges interrogate conventions of cinematic
narrative while exploring desire, reality and a kind of melancholy
perhaps peculiar to our times.

In anticipation of the Los Angeles Film Festival premiere of Syndromes
and a Century, REDCAT will present a selection of Weerasethakul's
films. Screenings include Mysterious Object at Noon, Blissfully Yours,
Tropical Malady, and Worldly Desires and other shorts selected by the
artist.

Mon, June 4: Mysterious Object at Noon (2000)
Wed, June 6: Blissfully Yours (2002)

Worldly Desires (2005, video, 40 min.)
Luminous People (2007, video, 15:22 min.)
Sat, June 9: Tropical Malady (2004)

The latest Cinema Spectacular, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! from director Guy
Maddin (THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD, TWILIGHT OF THE ICE NYMPHS).
In an unprecedented act of faith in the enduring power of the
theatrical experience, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! is being presented as an
expansive live event in select cities, featuring an 11-piece "live"
orchestra, a 3-person "Live" Foley (sound effects performed onstage)
team, and a "live" celebrity narrator, and onstage Castrato
supplementing the filmic image, to comprise a one-of-a-kind cinematic
spectacle.

Filmmaker Guy Maddin is appearing In-Person to present the film during
these exclusive live engagements in select historic movie palaces in
Chicago (The Music Box), New York (The Village East) and Los Angeles
(The Egyptian Theatre).

Following presentations of this unique stage production, the feature
film BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! will continue at the Egyptian as a regular

BRAND UPON THE BRAIN, 2006, The Film Company/Vitagraph Films, 96 min.
Dir. Guy Maddin. Whatever are young "Guy Maddin's" parents really up
to in their lighthouse home/orphanage on a chilly remote island?
Overbearing Mother (Gretchen Krich) tracks her son's (Sullivan Brown)
every move, bellowing for him to come home over the "Aerophone" just
as something interesting is about to happen! And poor Sis (Maya
Lawson), his older sister (who is rapidly blossoming into a young
woman) -- Mother will never let her have any fun! The intrigue
continues as deranged Mother, hellbent on restoring her youth and
sinister Scientist-Father (Todd Jefferson Moore) who is sequestered
night and day in his basement laboratory, engage in diabolical, secret
experimentation. When new parents of recently adopted children from
the orphanage notice strange wounds on the youngsters' necks, a pair
of teen sleuths, Wendy (Katherine E. Scharhon) and her brother Chance,
known as "The Lightbulb Kids," appear on the island to investigate --
and in the process, inspire Guy's first crush and Sis' first love
affair. The lurid family secrets that unfold arepositively shocking!

Seven Masterpieces by Kenji Mizoguchi
"With the death of Mizoguchi, Japanese film lost its truest creator."
—Akira Kurosawa

at LACMA
http://www.lacma.org/programs/FilmSeriesSchedule.aspx#1173718278786

Kenji Mizoguchi began his career in the silent-film era and quickly
became known for his vehement independence and uncompromising
artistry. His works spanned many genres, from contemporary melodrama
and historical epic to social realism and domestic tragedy, along with
the occasional biography, ghost story, or samurai tale. He directed
dozens of films, many of which were lost during World War II. Those
that remain make up one of the most beautiful bodies of work in any
art, of any time. Classics such as Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff, Story
of the Late Chrysanthemums, and The Life of Oharu are unequaled in
their pictorial and narrative richness and emotional force. It is
little wonder that critics the world over have chosen Mizoguchi as one
of the greatest directors in the history of cinema.

The seven films in this series were selected from among the Mizoguchi
titles in the Janus Films library by James Quandt, senior programmer
of the Cinematheque Ontario and organizer of the 1996 retrospective
"Mizoguchi the Master." Our thanks to Mr. Quandt for the introduction
and film descriptions, and to Sarah Finklea and Janus Films for making
the films available in new 35mm prints.

June 8 | 7:30 pm Ugetsu
June 8 | 9:20 pm Sisters of the Gion
June 9 | 7:30 pm Sansho the Bailiff

June 16 | 7:30 pm The Life of Oharu
