Joel Tauber explores elemental philosophical questions about our
relationships to nature and the environment in an often quixotic
approach. In a 12-channel video installation and a series of
photographs, Tauber chronicles how he first fell in love with this
tree and then embarked on a quest to improve its living conditions, to
build a museum in its honor underneath its canopy, and finally, to
help it reproduce. Joel Tauber will be screening a number of the
videos from the 12 channel video installation.

Internationally recognized for his work in experimental and narrative

Apichatpong Weerasethakul presents his first solo exhibition in the
United States. Weerasethakul's films explore perception, impermanence
and the imaginary, cultivating fanciful potential within the mundane.

perhaps peculiar to our times.

Kenji Mizoguchi began his career in the silent-film era and quickly
became known for his vehement independence and uncompromising
artistry. His works spanned many genres, from contemporary melodrama
and historical epic to social realism and domestic tragedy, along with
the occasional biography, ghost story, or samurai tale. He directed
dozens of films, many of which were lost during World War II. Those
that remain make up one of the most beautiful bodies of work in any
art, of any time. Classics such as Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff, Story
of the Late Chrysanthemums, and The Life of Oharu are unequaled in
their pictorial and narrative richness and emotional force. It is
little wonder that critics the world over have chosen Mizoguchi as one
of the greatest directors in the history of cinema.

The seven films in this series were selected from among the Mizoguchi
titles in the Janus Films library by James Quandt, senior programmer
of the Cinematheque Ontario and organizer of the 1996 retrospective
"Mizoguchi the Master." Our thanks to Mr. Quandt for the introduction
and film descriptions, and to Sarah Finklea and Janus Films for making
the films available in new 35mm prints.

Projections is a library of silent artists-made videos, films and still images
from
which will be drawn works to create nightly wall-projected programming as part
of the 1% for Art Program for the Shops on Lake development. Each year, 5 awards
will be given of $1000 each, one to an artist under the age of 18, for work of
high
merit to be included in the Projections library of work. A 5-person panel of
arts
professionals will judge the submissions. The chosen works will be shown at a
reception for the artists and enter the library of works.

The transient setting and varied texture of the programming dictate that
primarily
short, time-based media works as well as still images are most appropriate.
However,
work with rich content of any duration, which can be appreciated in passing as
well as
studied at length will be considered. The work can be narrative or abstract,
but needs
to be sensitive to local community standards of decency for public art.

The projected images are cast directly on the wall at 415 South Lake Ave
adjacent to
the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. The projection surface measures approximately
15 X 20 feet in size. A website carries the schedule of that day's programming
with a brief
description of the work and short artist's bio. An outdoor LCD panel located
near the projection
displays a webpage for immediate information about what is on view at any given
time. The
schedule varies nightly throughout the week, so that the program appears fresh
to the regular
viewer.

Work will be shown in MPEG2 video format, in various resolutions, up to 720p HD.
Final versions will be accepted in other computer digital file formats such as
Quick Time or AVI and encoded as MPEG2. Non-copy protected DVDs are
acceptable; tape formats are not. If accepted, digital file format files should
be as uncompressed as possible. FTP access is preferred.

Works which are submitted that contain sound will be considered with the
understanding that the visual component should stand on its own, and that the
audio should not be integral to the piece, as it will not be included in the
installation.

MAK Center Seeking Getty Foundation Multicultural Summer Intern

Getty Foundation Multicultural Summer Internship at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture


The MAK Center is currently accepting applications for a unique summer internship sponsored by the Getty Foundation at this international exhibition space for art and architecture located in West Hollywood.

The Getty internships are designed to increase diversity in professions related to the visual arts and are intended for outstanding students who are members of groups currently underrepresented in these professions: individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic/Chicano, Native American and Pacific Islander descent. In addition, the candidate must be a currently enrolled undergraduate having completed at least one semester of college by June 2007. S/he will not graduate before December 2007, and s/he must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County.

The internship is a full-time, consecutive 10-week position beginning no earlier than June 4, 2007 and ending no later than August 24, 2007. Salary for the entire 10-week period is $3,500. The intern will be required to attend meetings and events sponsored by the Getty Foundation and to submit a report to the Foundation at the end of the 10-week period. The MAK Center’s office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Interns will be expected to work some evenings and weekends for special events but will receive compensatory time off.

MAK Public Programs/Communications Intern

Based at the historic Schindler House in West Hollywood and the Mackey Apartments in the Mid-Wilshire district, an intern will join the MAK Center staff to tend to the general daily operations of the Center and assist the
Director and Program Coordinators with production of summer programs and planning for fall programs. Preparations for fall include planning for the Final Projects exhibition for the international artists and architects in residence, planning the fall exhibition of work by artist Victor Burgin, and organizing the annual architecture tour of modernist homes and buildings. The intern will participate in assessing the needs of the organizers and contributing to these summer events, and will interact with the artists and architects in residence.

On a daily basis the intern will work to gather and disseminate materials for press releases, communicate with volunteers, assist with event execution, and prepare reports. They will also assist in updating and maintaining the MAK Center archive, an extensive collection of materials documenting all of the creative output of the MAK Center. The intern will assist in the organization of the archive materials both digitally and physically. Other duties will include responding to phone calls, emails and other communications; handling admissions and book sales and assisting staff with special projects.

The ideal candidate should posses more than a general knowledge of art and/or architecture. Good communication, written and verbal skills are necessary for dealing with a diverse population, as is a flexible schedule and an interest in all aspects of event planning from project development to site set-up and clean-up. An aptitude in Macintosh computers is required (with a solid working knowledge of such programs as FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office and Photoshop), as are organizational skills and a good attitude.

It started with filming the tree. Something was released in that manner of filming seemingly farthest removed from the procedure of the early films. I first thought a simple ordering of this rich material might be enough... But the essential feelings and meanings of that filming held themselves back. So I pursued sounds of comparable texture and richness, from which material the 'deaf bar"… and stockyard sounds… attached themselves to the work. But the film only came into its form-life with the idea of linking this deep-rooted and far-outreaching tree material with that film on paranoia that had fascinated me for many years. – L. G.

Machete/Gillette ... Mama

Rapid, disjunctive images and sounds from aspects of life in the Dominican Republic - a film dealing with representation itself, within ritual, within cinema, within history, within narrating. The title is a Dominican song, based on a Haitian song, meaning a razor-sharp machete; it is… a complex metaphor within the cultures from which it comes, but also within the film, extending my longstanding interest in edges, borders, horizons, into material of documentary [nature]. – LG

This program surveys the trailblazing career of one of America’s foremost avant-garde masters. Best known for the cycle Elective Affinities, a series of four feature-length films started in the early 1970s and completed in 1981, Gottheim has carried out an absorbing exploration of the relationship of images to sound and time, examined issues of racial, cultural and personal identity, and considered the theme of nature in art. He is also the founder of the influential Department of Cinema Studies at SUNY Binghamton

A bowl of blueberries in milk, changing light radiant on the berries and on the glazed bowl, the ever more radiant orb of milk transforming into glowing light itself, with a brief shadow coda answering the complex play of shadows. The regular pulses of light framing the looser rhythmus of the spoon, itself a frame. A charging of each of the frame's edges with its own particular energy. Within and without, whites and blues, lines and curves. The pulses of vision, the simple natural processes, lift the spirit. – L. G.

Mouches Volantes – Elective Affinities, Part II

Elective Affinities is a series of four feature-length films Gottheim started in the early 1970s and completed in 1981 with Tree of Knowledge; the series explores not only images and their relationship to sound and time (a recurring theme in his work), they also examine issues such as family, psychology, education, freedom, and the theme of nature in art.
In Mouches Volantes… three elements… were brought together: the suggestive title….; a narration by Angelina Johnson of the story of the life of her husband, Blind Willie Johnson; and groups of visual material, light fragments from my own personal world of occupations…. As in all my films, the basic processes of cinema, the exposing of film stock to light, here the stringing together of linear patterns of sound and image, become metaphors, embodiments of acts of coming to feel, coming to know. – L. This is the first section to be released from a large work constructed from material made in Haiti, mostly on Hi-8 video. Hand is my son. He’s now 12. The initial production was partially supported by a grant from the Jerome Foundation. My venture in Haiti was to some extent inspired by Maya Deren. I was searching for traditional forms that related to the structures of my previous films. And something else.—L.G.

Born 1936, Larry Gottheim taught himself 16mm filmmaking in the 1960s and became one of America’s leading avant-garde filmmakers. From his late-1960s series of sublime “single-shot” films to the dense sound/image constructs of the mid-1970s and after, his cinema is the cinema of presence, of observation, and of deep conscious engagement. While addressing genres of landscape, diary and assemblage filmmaking, Gottheim’s work properly stands alone in its intensive investigations of the paradoxes between direct, sensual experience in collision with complex structures of repetition, anticipation and memory.
Gottheim developed the Department of Cinema in Binghamton, N.Y. and taught there for more than three decades. This extremely influential department attracted the most talented artists, academics, and filmmakers of the day including Ken Jacobs, Hollis Frampton, Peter Kubelka, and Ernie Gehr among many others. In the 1990’s Gottheim has also served for a brief time as director of the Filmmaker’s Co-op in New York.
Larry Gottheim’s films are in the collections of museums and archives throughout the world, and a program of his restored early films premiered at the 2005 New York Film Festival.

AndrewShire Gallery presents NAM JUNE PAIK: Selected Works, an exhibition of artworks by Korean-American artist Nam June Paik whose video art objects and installations offer a glimpse into the life of one of our most treasured artists. Considered the “father of video art” by some, Paik was a composer, performance artist and member of the legendary sixties neo-Dada international avant-garde Fluxus movement and the Happening scene in New York.

The exhibition will consist of a wall-sized installation of 100 images of tulips transformed into wallpaper editions with a vintage television set, plus video-based works and multiples constructed from laserdiscs, CDs, vinyl recordings and other found objects. Black and white photographs by Lim Young Kyun who documented Nam June Paik’s performances, events and activities for twenty years will also be shown.

Nam June Paik died on January 29, 2006. His presence lingers in the surprising array of ideas and artworks he left behind. These works signal the contribution the artist made to contemporary art and culture. Paik’s often whimsical compositions, video-objects and installations are studied portraits wherein the artist himself seems to look out across the distance from the work to a point inside each of us. These artworks, already held in preservation, are perpetually connected to us while appearing suspended in time due to their vintage look. They serve as elucidations in which the artist and his countless viewers are portrayed and linked even as their mutual search for meaning is in flight. In his absence, Paik somehow still lives out the revelations he experienced in the bounds of the work which endlessly reproduces his era and his vision.

FREEWAVES Multicultural Undergraduate Summer Internships 2007 are for 2 positions, Web/Archive Intern and Administrative/Marketing Intern, both for 10-weeks, full-time, $3,500 gross salary. The central project will be setting up next festival on Hollywood Blvd. !!!

In accordance with The Getty Grant Program, candidates must be:

* members of underrepresented groups, particularly individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent;

The Los Angeles ghetto of Watts in the mid-1970s is seen through the eyes of Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders), a sensitive dreamer growing detached and numb from the psychic toll of working at a slaughterhouse. Frustrated by money problems, he finds respite in moments of simple beauty: the warmth of a coffee cup against his cheek, slow dancing with his wife (Kaycee Moore) to the radio, holding his daughter. Writer/director Charles Burnett offers no solutions, but merely presents the reality of African-American life—sometimes hauntingly bleak, sometimes filled with transcendent joy and humor. Combining lyrical elements with a neorealist documentary style, the family portrait he paints is deeply compassionate.

Screenings for the week April 6 - 12 

Filmforum returns April 22 with a screening that will include Los
Angeles premieres of new works by Ken Jacobs, Bruce Conner, Jennifer
Reeves, and more! But in this email I'd like to highlight two other
screenings.

First, Jon Jost's newest film LA LUNGA OMBRA (THE LONG SHADOW) will
screen at the UCLA Film & TV Archive at the Hammer Museum on April 15.
Jon Jost will be there in person. Last time Jost was in town in
October 2004, it was for the US premiere of OUI NON at Filmforum, with
a full house. So we know that some of you are Jost fans, and I'm sure
all of you are thinking that there is no better way to celebrate
taking care of taxes with a good Jon Jost film.

But even better, the UCLA Archive is offering a limited number of free
tickets for this screening to readers of the LA Filmforum list. To
request free tickets, please send an e-mail to <archive@ucla.edu>,
mentioning that you saw the offer in this e-mail and specifying
whether you would like one or two tickets. And that's it!

There's no Filmforum on the 15th, so no conflict there either.

the National Endowment for the Arts to gather the writing of soldiers
and their families who have participated in the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The film transforms selections from this collection of
writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and

provides depth and context to these experiences through a broader look
at the universal themes of war literature. It uses a full panpoly of

1. Video as Urban Condition: how video shapes urban experience

The Video as Urban Condition "Video-pool" archive is a mobile collection of
moving images reflecting the mutability of video as it shifts between fact
and fiction, entertainment and persuasion, urban fantasy and reality-TV, art
and activism, surveillance and control.

The archive will be open to the public at Lentos Museum of Modern Art (in
Linz, Austria), 19 April-27 May 2007. The Video-pool installation will form
the environment and a constellation of points of reference for a series of
events on the themes "Public Space and Personal Media-politics", "Model
Cities, Wish Images and Playgrounds", "Voyeurism, (Self-)Control and TV".

2. Two Merit Scholarships Available
Shaped Video: Working with Objects, Space and VideoCall for Applications: Two Merit Scholarships available for emerging or mid-career artists to take a
two-week course with artists E.G. Crichton and Susan Working at Anderson
Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. The course will take place
August 13-24, 2007.

These awards are designed to help artists interested in combining video with
objects and space. Students will learn about the technologies behind creating
embedded video works and video installation and will discuss a critical
context that informs these works. Scholarships include: Full tuition, lodging
and three meals a day for the duration of the course. Winning applicants must provide for their own travel and studio fees.

Concept: What happens when artists take the ephemeral medium of video and shape it within sculptural space? For over four decades artists have defied limitations of time and material through experiments with embedded monitors, shaped screens, and projections onto objects and/or within constructed spaces. In this workshop the investigation will continue with an emphasis on simple constructed shapes, altered found objects, planned camera work, and simple video editing. E.G. Crichton is a professor of art at the University of California Santa Cruz
where she has taught courses in intermedia and digital imaging for 12 years.
Her work spans the mediums of video, photography, installation and
performance, with a special emphasis on collaboration. She has created public projects in New York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, England and throughout
California, and had solo exhibitions in Norway and California.

Susan Working is director of the wood program at Anderson Ranch. Previously a furniture designer and educator in San Francisco, she received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her current work focuses on combining wood with other media such as painting and digital media and on the collaborative process. www.susanworking.com

Anderson Ranch Arts Center, located 10 miles outside of Aspen Colorado, is an artists' community offering workshops and residencies. Anderson Ranch's wood program offers classes in furniture design, sculpture and woodturning. The newly expanded digital media program offers classes in video, digital imaging, animation, interactive media, and physical computing. Summer workshop faculty are professionals in their field and include nationally and internationally renowned artists. 3. PARTICIPATE IN THE POCKET FILMS FESTIVAL !
June 8, 9, 10, 2007 in Paris, France

The 3rd edition of the POCKET FILMS FESTIVAL is opening it’s call for entries worldwide. Shorts and features, fiction, documentaries, clips, experimental films - all types of films, exclusively shot with a cellular telephone, are now being accepted.

The selected films will be shown during the POCKET FILMS FESTIVAL on June 8, 9, 10, 2007 at the Georges Pompidou Center - the largest center for contemporary arts in Europe.

In 2005, the Forum des images launched the first edition of the POCKET FILMS FESTIVAL, a major event devoted to films made exclusively with cellular telephones. Our goal was to explore and initiate a better understanding of the impact of this new audio-visual tool, the video camera, included in the latest generation of mobile telephones. The first two editions of the POCKET FILMS FESTIVAL explored the creative uses of this tool and offered the presentation of new works by French video and graphic artists, writers, filmmakers, students of art and film schools and the general public, in major movie theaters. The Festival received more than 1,000 films which were made exclusively for the Festival, 200 of which were selected by a jury and screened at the Forum des images and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France. Many films have gone on to be shown in other international films festivals : Locarno, Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, Kiev and at the International Critic’s Week, at the Festival de Cannes.

The Forum des images is a major cultural institution in Paris, dedicated to the exploration of the relations between cinema, technologies and society through screenings, workshops, and the organisation of films festivals. The Forum des images is also a major French film archive with Paris as its theme.

4. Antimatter Underground Film Festival

Entry Deadline: April 15/07 (early); May 31/07 (final).

Tenth annual international festival seeks imaginative, volatile, entertaining and critical films and videos. Dedicated to the exhibition and nurturing of film and video as art, Antimatter is the premier showcase of experimental cinema in the west, encompassing screenings, installations, performances and hybrid media experiments.

Criteria: Independent productions, completed after Jan 1/05. Any style or genre. Max 30 mins.
Formats: 16mm, Super 8, MiniDV, DVD, VHS.
Preview on DVD (NTSC/PAL) or VHS (NTSC/PAL).

5. 2007 Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival Call for Entries now open

Organized by the Museum’s Public Program Division in the Department
of Education, the Festival will be held in November 2007.

SUBMISSION DATES: Now-May 31, 2007

ELIGIBILITY: The Festival only considers documentary films and videos,
including shorts, experimental non-fiction films, animated non-
fiction, and “new media” non-fiction. Production year must be 2005-2007. No resubmissions.

ENTRY FEE: NONE

PREVIEW FORMATS: 1/2” VHS (Clearly mark NTSC or PAL on the tape)

6. BRING THE MEAD TRAVELING FESTIVAL TO YOUR COMMUNITY

The Margaret Mead Traveling Festival is now available for booking. This year, program themes include worker rights in China, Mexican-American
migration, protecting international journalists, the intelligent design
debate, and more.

The Traveling Festival is comprised of six thematic programs, each
program approximately between 1.5 and 2 hrs, depending on length of films. Venues have the option of renting a full package (six programs, $1800) or a half-package (three programs, $900); this includes background and promotional information on titles, still images, preview videos for publicity purposes, and a guide for conducting film festivals and screenings. The presentation format is in video, in either VHS or DVD.

The Traveling Festival can be rented for a weekend marathon or for up to
six weeks.

DAS International Residency 2007 

DAS International Residency Programme
August - September 2007

DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL 29th MARCH 2007

DAS (Digital Arts Studios) at QSS (Queen Street Studios) initiated an International Digital Residency Program in 2006. There are four residencies a year, each lasting approximately 8 weeks. The Residency will offer studio rental, accommodation, stipend and artists' fee. (Participating artists' will have to self-fund travel to and from Northern Ireland.)

The International Digital Residency Program will enable artists' to come to Northern Ireland in order to develop their artistic practice in a productive, supportive and dynamic environment. DAS will also endeavour to provide the visiting artists' with an opportunity to present their work through exhibition.

The residency will provide participants with 24 hours studio access. A personal G5 Macintosh computer with broadband Internet and relevant software is provided (Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Macromedia etc.). Technical support, specialised training, information, opportunities and access to wide range of Digital Still, Video & Sound Recording equipment are on offer.

Artists' living and working in Ireland and the UK are not eligible.

Applicants must apply directly to QSS using the application form and guidelines.
